List of Works | Thank You's | Press Release

This body of work represents an environmental assemblage of recycled items.

It is an intimate portrayal of Gibby Waitzkin's life as it evolves, echoing cherished memories of people, places, and objects and her life-long passion for the environment. The works are assembled from recycled materials, which begin to tell their own story as they are transformed into artworks. The idea is to reassemble the debris of the past into a new visible surface that conveys a personal journey deeply embedded in the cycle of life, yet with environmental concerns.

Through a range of randomly arranged contrasting materials treated with multi-layered planes and highly-textured surfaces, the pieces are composed of artist-made paper with photographs, scanned imagery, dried and encaustic-preserved flowers from her own gardens.

The selection of the collage elements have symbolic references and bring forth the nostalgia of times past and memories of a simpler life. For Waitzkin, daisies evoke innocence; grasses reflect the fleeting quality of life; thistle- hard work, witch hazel- peace; red rose- love or war; black eyed Susan's- justice.

"The elements of the pieces reflect and mirror my own training and life experience - the growing and harvesting of the fibers and the flowers; the shredding, cooking, beating, and pouring of the pulp; the photography and digital printing; the composition - the poetic expression of a life or a moment sealed in beeswax..." writes Waitzkin.

This series was produced at Pyramid Atlantic's papermill over the past two years with resident paper artist Mary Ashton and Amanda Degener.
